What is a tech pack? A free guide and builder from a Guangzhou factory

A tech pack is the set of drawings and numbers a factory sews from. Our pattern room has been reading them since 2001. Build yours below: pick a garment, a fit and a fabric, and see what it costs before you give us anything.

  • No sign-up to start

How to make a tech pack in 7 steps

You make a tech pack by deciding seven things in order: the garment, its style and fit, the fabric, the artwork, the labels, anything unusual, and the quantity. Start here. The first three show your price as you go; we finish the rest with you.

1

Pick a garment

Done

Start from one of six garments, each in the styles we sew most. Already have a sketch or an AI mockup? Pick the closest garment here; send it to us with your pack at step 4 and we'll read the details off it.

2

Pick the style and fit

Choose one

The number under each style is how many of it we've already made, so there is a pattern to start from. Fit changes the size chart, not the price.

3

Fabric and weight

Choose one

Weight is measured in GSM, grams per square metre. Heavier fabric usually costs more and feels more premium; 350–400 gsm is the usual streetwear hoodie.

4

Artwork

With our team

Where each logo or print sits, measured in cm from the collar or the side seam, its size, and how it's applied: screen print, puff print, embroidery or DTG.

We finish steps 4 to 7 with you

Send us your choices so far and your artwork. We reply with a price for your quantity and fill in the rest of the tech pack with you: labels, special details, sizes and quantities.

5

Labels and packaging

With our team

Neck label or printed label, care label with fibre content, hangtag, and how each piece is folded and bagged.

6

Anything unusual

With our team

A side slit, a raw hem, a special stitch. Send us a photo and circle the detail. Our team prices these by hand.

7

Quantity and sizes

With our team

Total pieces, the split by size and where it ships.

Ask for a quote: the blank price depends on garment, fabric and quantity. Sampling takes 3–7 days, and bulk production takes 7–20 working days after sample approval, depending on order size, fabric and decoration.

Blank prices for the most common style of each garment, before printing, shipping and duties. Zip-ups, long sleeves, shorts and the other styles are priced in the builder above. Smaller runs from 50 pcs are possible on our stock styles.

Making the tech pack itself: hiring a freelance designer typically costs $100–500 per style (industry rate); the templates in this guide are free.

Why let the factory write it

Because we're the ones who have to sew it. A template from a design site doesn't know how our fleece behaves in a wash, or which rib needs which machine. Our pattern room does.

Questions first-time brands ask us

What is a tech pack?

A tech pack is the instruction file a clothing factory makes your garment from: flat sketches, fabric and trims, a size chart with tolerances, artwork placement, Pantone colours, labels, construction notes and the quantity per size, all in one document. The factory uses it to make your sample and then the bulk order, so the more exact it is, the closer both come to your design. Terms such as HPS, POM and PP sample are explained in our tech pack glossary.

Do I need a tech pack before I contact a clothing factory?

No. A photo of a garment you like and a rough quantity is enough for a first price. A tech pack is what gets the sample right the first time, so finish one before you pay for sampling. The builder on this page walks you through it.

What is the minimum order for a custom clothing brand?

Our fully custom styles start at 100 pieces per style. If you want to test a design first, our stock styles with your print or embroidery start at 50 pieces. Colours and sizes can be split inside those numbers.

How much does a tech pack cost, and can I make my own?

A freelance designer usually charges $100 to $500 per style. You can make your own: the builder on this page is free, and our example tech pack shows every page filled in.

How much does it cost to make 100 custom hoodies?

Ask for a quote: it depends on fabric, print and quantity.

How long does clothing production take after the sample is approved?

Sampling takes 3–7 days. Bulk production takes 7–20 working days after you approve the sample, depending on order size, fabric and decoration. Shipping time depends on where it's going.

Should I use centimetres or inches?

Use one unit throughout the whole file, and centimetres if you can: our size charts are written in cm, so a cm tech pack needs no conversion, and 1 inch is 2.54 cm, which rounds badly on tolerances like ±1.3 cm. Every size chart on this site switches between cm and inches.

Will you make a tech pack for me?

Yes: send us your sketch, reference photos or a sample garment on WhatsApp or by email to sales@unithundred.com, and we build the tech pack with you, starting from the size charts and fabric options on these pages.

Rather talk it through? Send us a photo.

A phone picture of a garment you like is enough to start. We'll reply with a price and the questions we'd need answered for a tech pack.
