The Questions That Actually Matter When Vetting a Clothing Manufacturer

Let’s be real — the way you talk to a factory says a lot about who you are as a buyer. You don’t even need to say it directly. The questions you ask? That’s what gives you away.

If you come in with “Hey, how much for hoodies?” — you’re getting a basic, surface-level answer. No detail, no effort. But when you start asking real, production-level questions, everything changes. Now you sound like someone who actually knows what they’re doing — and factories treat you differently.

First thing you want to lock in is capability. Don’t just ask MOQ and move on. Ask it properly: what’s your minimum order quantity for custom hoodies, and does it shift depending on color or size breakdown? That one question alone filters out a lot of suppliers. Some are built for big volume only, others are set up for smaller, more flexible runs.

Then go straight into structure: do you handle printing and embroidery in-house, or are you outsourcing it? This matters way more than people think. In-house production usually means faster turnaround, tighter quality control, and fewer communication gaps. Once things get outsourced, delays and inconsistency start creeping in.

Next up — quality. This is where most new brands mess up by not asking enough. Don’t be shy here. Ask them directly: what’s your defect rate, and how do you handle defective units? A serious factory will have real numbers and a clear system. Also ask how many QC checkpoints they run during production, and what happens to rejected pieces. If they can’t answer that cleanly, that’s a warning sign.

Timing is another big one. Always anchor it to something real: what’s your sample turnaround time, and how long for bulk — say, 200 pieces? Then go one step further and ask what could delay it. Experienced manufacturers won’t just give you a timeline — they’ll tell you where things can go wrong before it happens.

Now communication — this part is underrated but can make or break your whole project. Who’s your main contact? How good is their English? Sounds simple, but language gaps are where expensive mistakes happen. Also confirm where you’ll be talking — WhatsApp, WeChat, email — and how fast they usually respond.

Money side, keep it clean. Ask about payment terms and methods. Standard is 30–50% deposit, balance before shipping. Check what currency they prefer and whether they provide proper commercial invoices for customs — don’t assume it’s included.

And finally, proof. Always ask: can you show brands similar to mine that you’ve worked with in the past 12 months? Real factories have real work to show. If they hesitate or dodge that question, that tells you everything you need to know.

At the end of the day, this isn’t just about getting answers. It’s about showing the factory you’re not guessing — you understand how this game works. And once they see that, the whole conversation shifts.
